The Earthquake

On April 16th, a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Ecuador killing more than 480 people and injuring more than 4,000; these numbers are on the rise. The earthquake destroyed homes, businesses, and valuable infrastructure and has left thousands of people without electricity, water, and shelter. The government estimates more than $3 billion worth of damages directly attributed to the earthquake. This tragedy, combined with the economic crisis Ecuador is experiencing, as well as the recent devastating floods caused by El Niño, could not have come at a more inopportune time.
